Summing it up in a Harry Porterfield CBS interview ………

“Young men are only interested in two things, and that’s young girls and old cars. And we’re in the car business,” said Alex Levesque, founder and driving force behind AMG, the Automove Mentoring Group, located in Bedford Park.

“AMG is proactive against gang violence,” he said. “Chicago has the largest gang population in the country.”

In an effort to combat juvenile violence AMG volunteers have been recruiting gang members off the streets.

“People want to ignore them, and they think that it’s just going to go away, and it’s not going to go away,” Levesque said. “We take them into this large warehouse, and we train them how to restore classic cars from the 1930′s through the 1970′s.”

He created AMG 24 years ago, and since then not a single member of the mentoring group ever returned to their former life.

Former gang member Quantrell Haywood is one of 300 young men Levesque has mentored. He’s been at AMG for two years.

“I’ve always had something of an interest in cars. I came here and Alex gave me a chance,” Haywood said. “I don’t feel safe anywhere, but when I come here, I know it’s safe now.”

Ten-year-old Reese Price has been building model cars as he begins to work his way thru AMG.

“I don’t know what I’d do without cars,” he said. “I love what I’m doing.”

AMG volunteer Samuel Johnson said “you’ve got to start somewhere, and if we can start trying to mentor these kids, and get them going in the right direction, … I think it’s a great start.”

Levesque said, “We have to be able to find a way to recycle these human beings, and we just use cars to do it. It’s where my heart is. It’s what i must do.”

“I really think about things a lot different now,” Haywood said.

“They need us more now than ever before,” Levesque said.

  1. This isn’t just a good thing its a great thing. Im a car enthusiast myself but, don’t have lots of time on my hand. I have a 1969 ford mustang coupe really need some help with my restoration. 3. hey,why is your phone always busy ? I cant contact Alex, to do business with the man 😦 So, is there an alternative to communicate, and make arrangements for some work to be done on a car ?
I’d like to get some work done, and make a large cash donation, if I just could get through on the shop phone.

  4. Greetings…My brother was murdered September 20, 2015. He was the father of 15 plus kids and I would like for his boys to participate in the program that you have to offer for two reasons. One my brother’s death was a homicide which is still being investigated and he was always down for the cause. Secondly, he left behind a 1972 Cadillac coupe which he had recently placed in the shop for repairs. We would like to keep the car for his sons and just for sentimental value and I would love my boys and his sons to be able to join your mentoring program and restore this vehicle. We are willing to donate money to your organization as well in effort to promote your cause. Furthermore, I think this is the perfect opportunity to assist his sons in the healing process. My brother was a devoted father who did his best for all his children. He made a difference in the lives of people on his mails route as well as his community and family . This is just a thought I’m not sure what your take will be regarding my thoughts.. Ms. Cynthia Lewis.

I decided to have a conversation with him on last week to try to see if I could be of service to him, and asked him what is his goal in life and passion. He shared with me his desire to be an auto mechanicand that he has experience working in cars with his uncle. However he shows no interest in education. Is there a possible formy student to partake in your program so that he may understand the importance of education? I can’t leave him to failure. Stanleystubbs@yahoo.com thanks
